Guru Granth Sahib is the revered religious scripture of Sikhism. It holds a significant place in the lives of Sikhs, as it is considered the ultimate and everlasting spiritual guide, succeeding the lineage of the ten human Gurus of the Sikh faith. The initial compilation, known as Adi Granth, was meticulously put together by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan. Further additions were made by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, which included one salok, dohra mahala 9 ang, 1429 and all 115 hymns of Guru Tegh Bahadur. This revised version came to be recognized as Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
The holy text comprises of 1430 angs (pages) and encompasses 6,000 shabads (line compositions), which are skillfully crafted and set to the rhythmic melodies of ancient North Indian classical music. The scripture is predominantly organized into thirty-one ragas, with each Granth raga further divided based on length and author. The hymns within the scripture are primarily arranged according to their respective ragas. Written in the Gurmukhi script, the Guru Granth Sahib features a range of languages including Lahnda (Western Punjabi), Braj Bhasha, Khariboli, Sanskrit, Sindhi, and Persian. Copies in these various languages are often collectively referred to as Sant Bhasha.
Guru Granth Sahib is a profound composition collectively authored by seven Sikh Gurus: Guru Nanak Dev, Guru Angad Dev, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Hargobind, and Guru Tegh Bahadur. Additionally, Guru Gobind Singh introduced one sloakh in mahala 9 Ang 1429. It also encompasses the wisdom and teachings of revered Indian sants (saints), such as Ravidas, Ramananda, Kabir, Namdev, and others. The inclusion of the traditions and teachings of two Muslim Sufi saints, Bhagat Bhikan and Sheikh Farid, further enhances its richness and inclusivity.
The message conveyed through the Guru Granth Sahib is one that envisions a society founded on divine justice, devoid of any form of oppression. It promotes equality, unity, and righteousness as fundamental principles to guide individual and collective behavior, thus inspiring a harmonious and just society.
